I must have played the role around thirty or forty times.
Yes! Yes! Some people call me Jesus too! Some people when they see me they ask, “Jesus! Where are you going?” So people know who Christ Mihindukula is. People don’t know my other name Christy Fernando. Or the name that appears in my birth certificate. I use a shortened version of the name Mihindukulasuriva — Mihindukula — because usually artists use such names as stage names.
Gokula…That’s Nandamalini’s husband’s name…Gokula. Mihindukula… Names like these are suited for the stage. Instead of using Fernando, such names suit the stage. So many people, even in newspapers articles that are published about me, refer to me as Christy Mihindukula. Even in plays, when the credits come up, I put my name as Mihindukula.
I started in 1962. Then many years passed…And four years ago Kelaniya University organised a performance of the Duwa Passion Play. So we went to Bishop’s College Auditorium and played Jesus. Within the course of those 50 years I must have played the role around thirty or forty times.
