Lee Sui King

Mrs Sui King Chang left Hong Kong in the 1950s to meet Yung-Hsien, the man she would later marry. Sui-King is today one of the last surviving first generation Chinese migrants. She talks about her journey to Ceylon by ship and her husband’s pioneering business, the New Chinese Shop on Chatham Street, which the family still runs.

My name is Li Sui King. (Laughs). I born in China. Born in China. Kangtong, from Hong Kong. 1959, I came to Colombo. Lanka in 1959. 

Somehow I come here. I like the place. I like the place. To Lanka…is getting married. My husband’s friend recommend me to come. By ship with…my father accompany with me. Everything…I bring a lot of things… (laughs) More than ten pairs of shoes…I had two cases. Father, one case. I had two suitcases. 

Really enjoy. I had the time to breakfast, lunchtime, tea time…in time. After dinner finish, I go to the ship…all his friends. I say I don’t know to dance. Come, come, come…They like me. Everybody like me. I take the photograph with the captain. So nice. Daddy’s partner. Hong Kong partner recognised me.

Very good businessman. Trust daddy.  Daddy in Lanka for 19 years. Very handsome man. With only write letter…Daddy…very happy…Daddy very clever. Import bedsheets, pillowcase, children’s…Lanka no slipper. Daddy import slipper from Japan. And though they Lanka no noodle machine. Daddy import noodle machine from Japan. That’s all. The number one…our shop is the number one shop. Business very good. That time why business was good? Because we had a tailor…a superb tailor from China. Dinner suit… everything…very good, very good. Can make the superb suit. Suit. Suit.

Now Chatham Street,  there is doctor, lawyer…come very young doctor…only gentlemen…only gentlemen. 

Lanka is a very good place. Very good place. I like. I had a nice house and had a girl to help me. They are very helpful. There is my family there…. We are…Even Lanka, Trincomaleee, Galle…I didn’t visit.
