Listen to Jezima Ismail storiesJezima Ismail, born in Sainthamaruthu, Sri Lanka, is an educator, broadcaster, social activist, and human rights advocate. As principal of Muslim Ladies College from 1975 to 1988, she broke barriers for women in education and leadership. In 1976, she founded the Muslim Women's Research and Action Forum. In 1989, the Government of Sri Lanka honored her with the title of Deshabandhu. Jezima's advocacy for women's rights was shaped by her father’s progressive beliefs, inspiring her to fight for Muslim women’s empowerment and to challenge the political barriers faced by women in Sri Lanka.
Throughout her career, Jezima broke barriers, from fighting for women’s rights within the mosque to challenging the societal separation of men and women. Jezima’s connection to her roots remains strong, especially through music. Raised in a family that valued the arts, she recalls her father’s support for her musical and dance aspirations, even though she ultimately chose a different path. "I wanted to be a dancer, a singer, a film star," she says, but instead became a leader in education and activism. Music still plays a vital role in her life, with daily singing sessions keeping her grounded.
As she reflects on her journey, Jezima’s story is one of resilience, defiance, and a commitment to creating a more just world for women.
